Review of Prisoner Through Care Projects (Indigenous Justice Programs)

The Attorney-General's Department (Department) provides grant funding for Indigenous justice initiatives through the Indigenous Justice Program (Program) (formerly called the Prevention Diversion Rehabilitation and Restorative Justice Program). The Program funds a range of prisoner projects under the Prisoner Through Care Sub-program (Sub-program).

The purpose of Prisoner Through Care Sub-program, is to provide funding for the development and implementation of innovative and culturally relevant prisoner through care services for Indigenous offenders, in both the adult and juvenile prison setting, to help reduce repeat offending and over-representation in the criminal justice system.

The Department engaged GJS to undertake a rapid, but comprehensive (rigorous, accurate and informative) impact reviews to assess the effectiveness of the Prisoner Through Care Projects in Western Australia and South Australia. In the implementation of the review, GJS incorporates a blend of international and domestic rapid review methodology, with inclusion and collaboration with Indigenous providers and stakeholders, and utilising Indigenous consultants. The review is participatory and includes a number of face-to-face interviews as well as small group consultations.
